When Do Babies Start and Stop Teething?

December 16, 2022

When your baby is teething it may seem like forever as they wake up crying and put everything in their mouth for comfort.

However, it only takes about 8 days for a tooth to erupt completely.

This is just one fact about your baby's teeth. If you want to soothe your baby then there is a lot more to know about your little one's teeth.

Read this guide to get a head start on your baby's dental health and know when it is time to visit a pediatric dentist in

Apopka

When Does Teething Begin?

Every baby is different, but there are general guidelines for when they start teething. Most babies begin this process between six to 10 months. You may notice the first teething symptoms well before seeing any teeth, but this may be a sign that they are on their way.

Some babies may be late bloomers and won't see their first teeth until 12 months in some cases. However, if your baby has no teeth by one year then you should take them to a dentist for a check-up.

When Does Teething End?

The good news is that baby teeth come in incrementally. This means that your baby may be teething on and off again with breaks. They also may get used to teeth coming in and show fewer signs of pain and discomfort.

By the time your baby is a toddler, between two and three years old, they should stop teething and have all of their "baby teeth." The total number of teeth at this age is 20, which will eventually fall out at the age of six or seven to make room for their permanent teeth.

Even though these 20 teeth are temporary it is still important to follow dental cleaning tips to keep your baby's gums healthy and their teeth cavity-free.

Timeline of Teeth Appearance

Your baby's first tooth will likely be the upper or lower incisors. A few months later, the teeth next to the lateral incisors will emerge. The first molars or canines will come next usually on the top of the mouth followed by the bottom. Lastly, the second molars appear by 33 months.

How to Make Your Baby More Comfortable

Teething in babies is a stressful experience for both you and your baby. Trying to help your baby can also be a challenge. Luckily, there are many techniques to soothe them that you can try, including:

  • Using a teething ring
  • Massaging their gums
  • Letting them chew on soft toys
  • Giving them a cold washcloth or spoon
  • Natural teething medication

Try what works for you and your baby. But, remember that they will still have to go through this stage even if it is difficult. Just offer them comfort and hugs to make it as painless as possible.
